It is important to give yourself some extra time on the roads for the following reasons:
Following too closely can lead to collisions. When the roads are wet or icy, the distance it will take you to come to a complete stop will be much greater than usual. Slow down, and allow the cars around you even more space than usual.
Speeding can lead to a collision. If you are speeding in winter weather, you run the risk of hitting ice, or snow and potentially causing an accident. Allot extra time so you can get places without having to speed.
There may be collisions or accidents on the road. While you may be taking the extra time necessary to get to your destination safely, not everyone on the roads is necessarily doing the same. Accidents can cause traffic snarls, or even road closures in some extreme cases. Make sure you allow extra time for road closures or to get around collisions, and you may also want to consider knowing an alternate route that will get you to your destination.
Take extra time for closed roads. Sometimes when the weather is particularly bad, roads may be blocked or closed. As a result, you may have to take a detour, and those detours might be crowded with other cars. Give yourself some extra time to make sure you aren’t running late if this happens.
Reduce your stress. There is nothing worse than being in a rush to get somewhere. In fact, it may distract you to the point that you may not be paying sufficient attention to the road. Avoid this by allowing plenty of time to get to your destination.
Driving in the winter weather can be stressful enough. Don’t add to your or the stress of others on the road by driving carelessly. Allow yourself plenty of time to get to wherever you are going this winter.
